Bhadohi, 08
March (HS): An FIR has been filed against a man and seven of his family members
for allegedly committing triple talaq against his wife and tormenting her over
dowry, authorities said on Sunday. Jannat Bano, 21, filed a complaint against
her husband Dr Zainul Abedin and his family members at the city police station
on Saturday evening.
According
to Station House Officer Sachchidanand Pandey, Bano married Dr Abedin, a
Makhdumpur area inhabitant in Bhadohi, on December 21, 2024. According to the
complaint, the accused allegedly collected Rs 10 lakh from the woman's family
before the marriage under the guise of building a hospital and acquiring
pathological lab equipment.
A few days
later, the accused reportedly collected another Rs 25 lakh from the woman's
family, stating money was necessary as a bribe to gain a government position,
he said.
According
to the FIR, the accused also reportedly took Rs 1 lakh on the day of the
wedding and purchased fake gold jewelry, promising the bride's family that
authentic ones would be purchased later. The problem of phony jewelry caused a
commotion at the wedding, but the ceremony was held when the two families made
an agreement, according to the officer.
According
to Pandey, the woman said that within four days after the marriage, she was
subjected to physical violence and dowry harassment.
When she
returned to her parents' house in January 2025, her husband allegedly requested
Rs 5 lakh cash and a vehicle. According to the lawsuit, on February 14, 2026,
an altercation erupted between the two families, and the accused reportedly
attempted to strangle her.
According
to the police, the woman was rescued by neighbors after the accused reportedly
said 'talaq' three times in front of them. Triple talaq, often known as fast
divorce, has been illegal in the nation since 2019.
