Hooghly, 08 March (H.S.): Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders and workers on Sunday staged a protest rally in Rishra in West Bengal’s Hooghly district against the recent hike in domestic LPG prices.

The rally, held following a call by Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, was led by Rishra Municipality chairman Vijay Sagar Mishra.

Hundreds of party workers and supporters took part in the march from Bagkhal to Wellington Jute Mill in Rishra, raising slogans against the Centre and protesting the increase in cooking gas prices.

Several local TMC leaders, including Rishra Municipality vice-chairman Jahid Hasan Khan, councillors and members of the civic body, were present at the rally.

Addressing the gathering, Mishra alleged that the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had resulted in the deletion of names of many genuine voters in Rishra and other parts of West Bengal.

He also criticised the recent LPG price hike, claiming that it had placed an additional burden on common people already grappling with rising prices.

Mishra said the TMC would continue its protest against what he described as the “anti-people policies” of the central government.
