Thiruvananthapuram, 24 March (H.S.):Senior Muslim League leader and former minister Dr. M.K. Muneer, son of Kerala political stalwart C.H. Mohammed Koya, is currently facing a severe personal and financial crisis, with his ancestral home in Kozhikode on the verge of being auctioned over unpaid bank dues.
Muneer, who has been an influential figure in Kerala politics for over three decades, is battling multiple challenges. While deteriorating health and political uncertainty have already limited his public engagement, mounting financial liabilities have now pushed him into a precarious situation. The bank has reportedly issued a recovery notice over a loan taken for renovating ‘Crescent House,’ the family’s iconic residence at Nadakkavu.
The outstanding loan amount has risen to ₹58 lakh, prompting the bank to initiate stringent recovery proceedings. Although the liability was reduced to ₹48 lakh under a one-time settlement scheme, Muneer has been unable to clear the dues. If the payment is not made by March 31, the property—closely associated with the legacy of C.H. Mohammed Koya—faces the risk of being seized and auctioned.
The development comes at a time when Muneer has stepped away from contesting the upcoming Assembly elections, citing health concerns and financial constraints. His absence from the electoral arena has triggered speculation about his political future, with discussions also emerging about a possible nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
This is not the first time Muneer has faced financial distress. He had earlier sold another property in Jaffer Khan Colony to settle debts. However, the current threat to his ancestral home has caused concern within the Indian Union Muslim League, as the residence has long served as a key centre for political deliberations in Kozhikode.
The situation has also sparked wider debate in public circles, with many questioning how a leader who held multiple ministerial and legislative positions has come to face such hardship, highlighting the personal costs of a life in public service.
