Palakkad, 02 March (H.S.):Actor, television personality and filmmaker Ramesh Pisharody is likely to be fielded as the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate from the Palakkad Assembly constituency, according to party sources. Indications suggest that Pisharody has conveyed his willingness to contest, and his name is reportedly the only one forwarded to the Congress screening committee for final consideration.

The move comes amid efforts by the Congress-led UDF to retain the constituency following recent political turbulence. The sitting MLA, Rahul Mamkootathil, was expelled from the party in the wake of a rape case, prompting the leadership to search for a strong and credible candidate capable of consolidating support and safeguarding the seat.

Earlier, senior leaders including K. Muraleedharan were said to be under consideration for Palakkad. However, party insiders indicate that the final shortlist now features only Pisharody’s name, signalling a strategic shift towards projecting a fresh and popular face.

Congress leaders are believed to be banking on Pisharody’s widespread recognition and acceptability as a film and television star to translate into electoral gains. Known for his affable public persona and strong connect with audiences across Kerala, Pisharody is seen as someone who can attract both traditional Congress voters and neutral sections, particularly youth and first-time voters.

Party sources suggest that internal assessments point to a favourable winning probability if Pisharody enters the fray. His potential candidacy is viewed as part of a broader strategy to counter anti-incumbency sentiment and rebuild public confidence in the constituency after recent controversies.

Interestingly, Pisharody’s name had earlier surfaced in connection with the Thripunithura Assembly constituency as well, indicating that the party has been exploring his electoral prospects for some time.

While an official announcement from the Congress high command is awaited, political observers say the selection of a high-profile cultural figure reflects the UDF’s intent to inject fresh energy into its campaign in Palakkad. If confirmed, Pisharody’s entry would add a new dimension to the electoral contest, setting the stage for a closely watched battle in the constituency.
