Chennai, 04 January (H.S.) : Chief Minister MK Stalin paid rich tributes to the late legendary film producer AVM Saravanan on Sunday, describing him as a towering figure who played a quiet yet influential role in shaping Tamil cinema and public life.

Speaking at a commemorative event in Virugambakkam where he unveiled a portrait of the late producer, Stalin highlighted that it is impossible to discuss the history of Tamil cinema without acknowledging the massive contributions of AVM Studios. The Chief Minister noted that Saravanan had nurtured the institution founded by his father, AV Meiyappa Chettiar, with unparalleled dedication and steadfast commitment.

During his speech, the Chief Minister recalled Saravanan’s early association with the Dravidian movement, noting that as a student, the producer had won a speech competition by reciting iconic dialogues from the film Parasakthi. Stalin also touched upon the deep personal and political relationship shared between the AVM family and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

He cited historical instances, such as Karunanidhi’s involvement in resolving a major labor strike at the studios and his support for Saravanan’s magazine, Hello Madras, as evidence of their long standing mutual respect and cooperation.

Sharing personal anecdotes, Stalin mentioned his regular interactions with Saravanan during morning walks at Marina Beach when he served as the Mayor of Chennai. He praised the producer for his civic consciousness, recalling how Saravanan provided thoughtful suggestions for city development and used cinema halls to screen awareness campaigns on waste segregation and cleanliness.

Government authorities present at the event, including Minister Ma Subramanian, joined industry stalwarts like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in honoring the veteran. Stalin concluded by stating that Saravanan bound people together through affection rather than authority, ensuring his legacy lives on in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu.
