Chennai, 04 January (H.S.) : Chief Minister MK Stalin presented state level awards to the most distinguished handloom weavers and exporters for the year 2024-25 during an event held on Saturday. The awards were distributed to recognize excellence in the production of silk and cotton handloom products, as well as to honor those who have excelled in the export sector.

The Chief Minister handed over prize money totaling twenty lakh rupees along with certificates of appreciation to five selected awardees who have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication to the craft.

In the category of best handloom weaver for silk, the first prize was awarded to MR Gopinathan from the Arani Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society. The second prize was shared by members of the Thirubuvanam and Kanchipuram Anna Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society, represented by V Rajalakshmi and P Gowri.

Additionally, the third prize was secured by members belonging to the Thirubuvanam and Tirupur Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies. These awards aim to encourage the traditional weaving community and boost the handloom industry in the state.

During the ceremony, Handlooms and Textiles Minister R Gandhi and Chief Secretary N Muruganandam were present to support the initiative. Government authorities stated that these honors are part of the state's ongoing efforts to preserve the heritage of handloom weaving while promoting economic growth through exports.

The officials emphasized that the government is committed to providing necessary welfare measures and platforms for weavers to showcase their products globally. The recognition is expected to inspire more artisans to maintain high standards in the textile sector.
