Dibrugarh (Assam), 17 August (HS): Five people have killed in the last week at Dinjoy Tea Estate in Dibrugarh district due to acute gastroenteritis, heatstroke and other illnesses, according to the district health department.

Reports said multiple gastroenteritis cases were detected in the tea estate, prompting the deployment of medical teams and doctors. However, before their arrival, five individuals, including a child, a woman and an elderly person had already killed. The deceased were identified as 12-year-old Kartik Mirdha, 70-year-old Rita Mure, 17-year-old Rajiv Nayak, 30-year-old Ayesha Mirdha and 60-year-old Jayanti Rajput.

Officials confirmed that two deaths were caused by gastroenteritis, one by heatstroke during a football game, one due to continuous vomiting and another from long-term cancer illness. Authorities clarified that not all deaths were related to gastroenteritis, though its cases are rising in the district.

To control the spread, the health department has launched awareness campaigns, distributed ORS packets and deployed medical teams for door-to-door checks. People have been advised to immediately report to nearby health centers, ASHA workers or medical staff if they experience symptoms like diarrhea.
