Kolkata, 16 August (H.S.) — On Independence Day, the Howrah Police Commissionerate arrested an illegal Bangladeshi national from Howrah railway station, one of the busiest junctions connecting Kolkata to the rest of India.
The accused has been identified as Mizan Mian, a resident of Kurigram district in Bangladesh. During interrogation, he admitted to illegally entering India through the Tripura border around 22 years ago. He also confessed to obtaining a forged Aadhaar card through a local agent in Agartala after several failed attempts. Mian married a local woman in Tripura and the couple has a daughter.
According to police sources, Mian was unable to produce the alleged Aadhaar card during questioning. He claimed that he was at Howrah station to return to Bangladesh, but investigators have noted contradictions in his statements. Authorities are probing whether he has any links to Bangladesh-based terror modules or other motives for his presence in West Bengal.
Mian was presented before a court and remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
Commenting on the incident, West Bengal BJP Secretary Umesh Roy alleged that illegal infiltration has become routine in the state. He said porous borders have enabled infiltrators to treat Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal as safe havens.
