Chennai, 16 August (H.S.): In a continued show of defiance, the villagers of Eganapuram have once again passed a resolution opposing the construction of a new airport in Parandur, marking the 14th time they have formally expressed their rejection of the project. This latest resolution was passed during a gram sabha meeting and highlights the deep-seated opposition that has been ongoing for over 1,100 days.

The proposed Greenfield Airport, announced in August 2022 by the Union government as the second airport for Chennai, has been met with persistent protests from the residents of Eganapuram and 19 neighboring villages. The primary concern of the villagers is the potential destruction of fertile agricultural lands, vital water bodies, and their residential areas. They argue that the project threatens their livelihoods and cultural heritage.

Over the course of their protest, the villagers have garnered support from various political and social figures. Prominent personalities such as actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and Naam Tamilar Katchi have all publicly backed the villagers' cause.

Despite assurances from the state government that the project will be executed without causing harm, the villagers have remained steadfast in their opposition. They have not only passed 14 formal resolutions but have also boycotted six gram sabha meetings as a form of protest. While the state government actively moves forward with land acquisition for the airport, the villagers are equally determined to protect their land and continue to demand the relocation of the project.
