Kolkata, 15 August (H.S.) The body of an unknown youth was recovered from the tunnel between Park Street and Dharmatala metro stations in the early hours of Friday. After the incident, serious questions have been raised on the metro security system.

According to the police, on Thursday night around 2:15 am, the RPF helpline informed the New Market police station that the body of a youth was lying in the tunnel going towards Esplanade, 112 meters away from Park Street station. The age of the youth is said to be around 25 to 30 years. Burn marks have been found on the right wrist of the youth. The body has been sent for post-mortem and efforts are being made to identify him. The photographs have been sent to all the police stations of Kolkata Police and State Police.

In view of Independence Day, the entire city was on high alert. Despite this, how the youth reached the tunnel has become the biggest question. Despite tight security and CCTV surveillance at metro stations, the incident of his entering the tunnel has exposed the security arrangements. The police is scanning all the CCTV footage to find out when and how the youth entered the tunnel. The police have registered a case of unnatural death in the matter and started an investigation.

Metro spokesperson Rupak Mitra said that the incident is being investigated and CCTV footage is being checked.

Notably, a similar case came to light in November 2023. At that time the body of a contract worker was found in the tunnel between Tollygunge and Ravindra Sarovar stations, who was associated with the metro construction work.
