South 24 Parganas, 15 August (H.S.) A civic volunteer allegedly attacked a girl with a sharp weapon for rejecting his marriage proposal in Amjhada More area under Basanti police station in South 24 Parganas district on Friday morning, . After that, the accused also tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. Both have been admitted to the hospital.

As per information, civic volunteer Vishwajit Khan posted in Basanti police station had proposed marriage to a girl named Sushmita Mandal. But Sushmita rejected the proposal. Getting furious over her rejection, the civic volunteer attacked Sushmita with a sharp weapon.

After the attack, the accused Vishwajit also tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. Immediately after the incident, the local people took both of them to Canning Subdivision Hospital in critical condition. From there, when their condition deteriorated, both were referred to Chittaranjan Medical College Hospital in Kolkata.

Locals said that Vishwajeet had been eyeing Susmita for a long time, but the girl never accepted his proposal. According to family members, Susmita was returning from Bengaluru after studying nursing, when the accused attacked her on the way.

Her brother also got injured while trying to save Susmita. He also suffered serious injuries and was also sent to Chittaranjan Medical College Hospital.

Basanti police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
