Guwahati (Assam), 15 August (HS): The 79th Independence Day was celebrated across Assam on Friday, with the state-level function held at the Veterinary College sports ground in Khanapara, Guwahati. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisted the national flag and addressed the gathering, highlighting Assam’s development achievements and future goals.

Remembering freedom fighters, the Chief Minister said he was proud to follow the legacy of leaders like Gopinath Bordoloi and Bishnuram Medhi. He cited major progress in infrastructure projects such as bridges over the Brahmaputra, the Guwahati ring road, the semiconductor project and the modernization of Namrup fertilizer plant. “In the last 4.5 years, we have built 14 km of roads daily. Assam is now ranked third in India for rapid development,” he said, thanking the Prime Minister and Home Minister.

Dr. Sarma declared that militancy has ended in Assam, crimes against women have fallen, and the government aims to eliminate child marriage by 2026. He announced that over 1.51 lakh jobs have been provided, with thousands more to be announced in October. Eviction drives have freed 1.2 lakh bighas of land, including satra lands, under the Basundhara scheme, benefiting over 2.29 lakh people.

The CM also unveiled plans to name a new flyover ‘Noonmati-Dighalipukhuri’ in honor of Maharaj Prithu and to organize a mass singing of ‘O Mor Aponar Desh’ by one lakh people in January. He announced the launch of the third edition of the Arunodoi scheme on PM Modi’s birthday and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to microfinance loan waivers for women.

Urging people to be self-reliant and protect Assam’s identity, Dr. Sarma warned against external threats, alleged “love jihad” incidents and demographic changes. He called for unity and urged citizens not to sell land or rent houses to strangers. He directed district commissioners to act strictly to safeguard Assam’s interests.
