Kolkata, 14 August (H.S.): The Kolkata Police Detective Department is likely to file the first chargesheet this month in the case of rape of a student inside the premises of Kasba Law College. Sources said the investigation is almost complete and the case will soon be placed before a lower court.

So far, four accused — Monojit Mishra, Javed Ahmed, Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Pinaki Banerjee — have been arrested. Police have identified Mishra as the prime accused, while Ahmed and Mukhopadhyay have been charged with assisting in the crime. The fourth accused, Banerjee, a college security guard, was allegedly a “helpless witness” during the incident.

On Wednesday, police collected Mishra’s voice sample at Presidency Central Correctional Home following a court directive. All four accused are currently lodged in the same correctional facility.

During the probe, police received two crucial forensic reports in July along with CCTV footage showing the accused dragging the victim to the guardroom where the assault took place.

Mishra already faced several criminal charges — including hooliganism, grievous assault with sharp weapons, beating junior students with the help of outsiders, and sexually harassing fellow female students. Despite this record, neither the college administration nor the police took strict action until this shocking incident inside the campus rattled the entire city.
