Former Jadavpur University Student Arrested at Delhi Airport for Attack on Minister Bratya Basu’s Convoy

Kolkata, 14 August (H.S.): In a major breakthrough, Kolkata Police have arrested Hindol Majumdar, a former Jadavpur University student, in connection with the March 1 attack on West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu’s convoy. Majumdar, who had been residing in Spain for research, was detained at Delhi Airport upon his return to India late Wednesday night.

A senior Kolkata Police officer confirmed on Thursday that a team has already left for Delhi to secure Majumdar’s transit remand and bring him to Kolkata for further investigation. Immigration authorities flagged his arrival after a lookout notice had been issued against him.

The incident occurred when Basu visited Jadavpur University to attend the Webkupa annual conference. Members of left-wing student organizations staged a protest, surrounded the minister, and vandalized his vehicle. Amid the chaos, Basu’s health deteriorated, requiring his admission to SSKM Hospital.

An FIR was lodged at Jadavpur Police Station shortly after the attack, naming Majumdar as one of the accused. He is an alumnus of Jadavpur University’s B.Tech pharmacy program and had been living in Spain for an extended period to pursue research.

Majumdar will be presented before a Delhi court on Thursday to obtain transit remand before being taken to Kolkata, where the investigation into the case will continue.
