Tinsukia (Assam), 14 August (HS): In a major pre-Independence Day security success, the Assam Rifles has recovered a significant cache of explosives from Phinbiru village, close to the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border.
The seizure, made barely 7 km from Tipong in Margherita subdivision, is suspected to be linked to ULFA (Independent) and NSCN (KYA) militants. The recovered items point to preparations for bomb-making, officials said.
Among the items found were 18 radio sets, four radio chargers, six electric wires, one handmade pistol, 59 detonators, six primers, two bomb fuses, and 60 live rounds.
According to authorities, the consignment was likely meant for attacks timed with the 79th Independence Day celebrations. The entire haul has been handed over to Assam Police for further investigation.
