Nalbari (Assam), 14 August (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday visited Nalbari, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multi-sector development projects worth ₹576 crore.
The CM formally inaugurated the much-awaited Barkura Railway Overbridge, built at a cost of ₹69 crore and named the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Overbridge. Initiated during the tenure of former MLA Ashok Sharma, the bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion in Nalbari town.
Other inaugurations included power substations at Gopal Bazar, Balitara, Satma and Milan Bazar, along with 37 new concrete roads covering 27.94 km under the Chief Minister’s Advanced Concrete Road Construction Scheme. A solid waste management project was also launched.
On the occasion of Nalbari District Day, foundation stones were laid for 20 projects, including a new overbridge at Ghagrapar, a pure drinking water supply project, urban forest development with 30,000 saplings, a new circuit house, a modern clock tower, high-mast smart street lights and a ₹30 crore scheme of the Water Resources Department.
The event, held at the Gordon Higher Secondary School ground, was attended by local MLA and minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, senior ministers Chandra Mohan Patowary, and Narayan Deka, who welcomed the CM.
Speaking to the media, Sarma said Kumar Bhaskar Varma was a national hero and a source of inspiration, and the government would continue to honour him. Responding to political remarks by Lurinjyoti Gogoi, he stated, “I challenged Rahul Gandhi while in Congress and I challenge him even today.” He reiterated that safeguarding Assam’s land and identity, alongside ensuring development and security, remains his top priority.
