Hooghy, 24 July (H.S.) Arambagh subdivision of Hooghly district is witnessing an alarming rise in snakebite cases. Over the past six months, 516 people have fallen victim to snakebites, in which five persons have lost their lives. All the affected individuals were treated at Prafulla Chandra Sen Medical College and Hospital, but all could not be saved.
According to the hospital data, 13 cases were reported in January. In February, the number jumped to 64, including one resident from the town. In March 57 cases were reported, followed by 74 in April. The number increased to 107 in May. June recorded 196 snakebite cases.
Dr. Ramaprasad Ray, principal of the medical college, said, Snakebite cases have been consistently rising in the region. While timely treatment has helped reduce the death rate, many patients are brought in too late, making it impossible to save them.
Hospital sources revealed that apart from Arambagh, patients from Bankura, Midnapore, and parts of East Bardhaman regularly seek treatment here. According to local sources, waterlogging and damp surroundings have increased snake activity. Farmers working in fields and even people inside their homes have been bitten. Doctors point out that delays in bringing patients to the hospital often lead to severe complications.
