Hooghy, 24 July (H.S.): Tension flared at the Chandannagar Municipal Corporation on Thursday afternoon as BJP workers created a major uproar during a protest. The BJP had organized a rally from the city’s ‘Chhabighar’ area to the corporation office, demanding action on a seven-point charter of demands. The rally reached the corporation premises around 12 noon.
As BJP workers approached the main gate of the building, the police attempted to stop them. However, after a prolonged scuffle and pushing from both sides, the gate was broken, and BJP workers barged into the premises and marched straight to the Mayor’s office.
The Mayor was not present at the time, and thus, the BJP delegation returned without submitting their memorandum. However, BJP leaders warned that they would return and intensify their agitation in the coming days.
On information, a large police contingent from Chandannagar Police Station, led by the Inspector-in-Charge, arrived at the scene and forcibly evicted the BJP workers from the premises.
