Prayagraj,
24 July (HS): In the orthopedics department of Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN)
Hospital, Prayagraj, 67-year-old Ram Ashish Singh was successfully operated
upon and saved from knee replacement. The patient had been suffering from
severe knee pain and difficulty in walking for many years. He had the problem
of osteoarthritis (knee joint wear), in which knee replacement is usually
recommended to elderly people.
Doctors
resorted to a modern technique called High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO) to save the
knee. This operation was done using MIPO (Minimally Invasive Plate
Osteosynthesis) technique, in which plate fixation is done through a very small
incision. In this procedure, bleeding is very less, muscles are not damaged and
the patient recovers quickly.
Dr.
Anand Kumar, senior orthopedic surgeon who led the operation, said, The
HTO technique is especially effective for patients who have partial knee
degeneration. This can protect the patient's own knee for years and avoid the
need for knee replacement. In this case, we successfully completed the
operation using the MIPO technique.
Medical
College Principal Dr. V.K. Pandey expressed happiness over this successful
operation and said, It is our endeavor to provide the patients with the
latest surgical techniques in government hospitals. Techniques like HTO are
proving to be a milestone in joint preservation. This helps the patients to
walk for a long time and improves their quality of life.
The
patient's X-ray showed varus deformity (bending of the knees), which caused
pain and imbalance while walking. After the operation, the patient's condition
is now stable and he will be discharged soon. Family member R.P. Singh said
that the entire procedure was explained to him by the doctors and he decided to
undergo the operation under their guidance. He expressed gratitude to the
government and the medical team for getting free treatment in the hospital.
