24 July (HS): The production of oilseeds and pulses is increasing in Uttar
Pradesh, with the Kharif season seeing a considerable increase in sesame,
groundnut, and soybean acreage, according to an official statement released on
Thursday. According to the Agriculture Department's most recent statistics, the
total area under oilseed crops in 2024 was 432.25 thousand hectares, which has
since increased to 547.14 thousand hectares in 2025.
Sesame
farming has seen the most dramatic rise, rising from 180.26 thousand hectares
to 303 thousand hectares in only one year, according to the report. Groundnut
and soybean crops have also increased.
The soybean area climbed from 34.12 thousand hectares to 40 thousand
hectares, while groundnut acreage expanded from 204 thousand to 218 thousand
hectares. Pigeon
pea (arhar) is still the most popular Kharif pulse among farmers. According to
the statement, when seeding of certain kinds goes into September, acreage is
expected to expand even more.
So
far, pigeon pea cultivation has increased dramatically from 184 thousand
hectares to 273 thousand hectares. Moong
farming has also expanded from 30,000 to 32,000 hectares, the report stated. The
area under important Kharif crops including paddy and maize has also
grown. Paddy acreage increased from
4,193 to 5,546 thousand hectares, and maize from 636 to 701 thousand hectares. Cotton
growing is also becoming more popular among farmers, with the area increasing
from 7,000 to 18,000 hectares, according to the report. Overall, the overall
area under Kharif crops in Uttar Pradesh has expanded significantly, from
around 6,574 thousand hectares last year to 8,262 thousand hectares this
season, it said.
