Golaghat (Assam), 24 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will visit Uriamghat in Sarupathar on Friday to review the ongoing preparations for an anti-encroachment drive in the region.

According to officials, action to clear encroachments in the Rengma Reserve Forest area is likely to to begin soon, as the deadline for eviction notices issued by the Forest Department has expired.

Following the government notice, thousands of alleged encroachers have started leaving Uriamghat. Long queues of vehicles belonging to the encroachers were seen near the Uriamghat police station from Wednesday. The exodus has reportedly been ongoing for the past three to four days.

Authorities said large portions of vacant government and forest land had been illegally occupied by suspected illegal settlers. The government has launched a state-wide drive to clear such encroachments, with major operations already conducted in districts like Dhubri, Goalpara, and Darrang, as well as in the Kaziranga National Park area. Uriamghat is the latest location targeted for eviction as part of the state’s broader anti-encroachment drive.
