Kolkata, 1 July (H.S.): With the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections approaching, the state's political climate has once again intensified. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised strong objections to the Election Commission’s recent notification regarding voter list revision, alleging that it is a covert attempt to benefit the BJP in Bengal. In response, the party is gearing up for a direct confrontation in Delhi.
A high-level TMC delegation will visit the Election Commission headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday to formally register its protest. The delegation includes Kalyan Banerjee, TMC’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha; Rajya Sabha MP Prakashchik Baraik; and three senior ministers from the West Bengal government — Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, Power Minister Aroop Biswas, and Minister of State for Finance Chandrima Bhattacharya.
TMC claims that a special voter list survey, being carried out in Bihar, is secretly being implemented in West Bengal under the same pretext. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already voiced strong concerns over this issue. Recently, TMC’s leader in the Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien, alleged, “Bihar is just an excuse — Bengal is the real target.” He further claimed that the Election Commission is working under the instructions of the BJP.
TMC believes the impartiality of the Election Commission is under question. That’s why the party has chosen not to limit its objection to written communication but to lodge an in-person protest in the national capital. While TMC usually sends its MPs for such demonstrations, the inclusion of three top state ministers this time indicates the seriousness with which the party views the issue.
As the 2026 elections draw near, political and administrative strategies are becoming increasingly sharp. TMC alleges that the Election Commission’s latest steps are helping the BJP lay the groundwork in West Bengal — a move the party is determined to resist from the outset.
This assertive stance from TMC makes it clear that the party is in no mood to take any strategic threat lightly as it prepares for a crucial electoral battle ahead.
