Thousands attend annual Urs at Baba Nagri

Srinagar, 10 June (H.S.): With a sea of people in attendance from different parts of J&K and outside, the 129th Urs of Hazrat Nizam-u-Din Kiyanvi (R.A) culminated today at Baba Nagri Wangath in district Ganderbal’s Kangan town.

The last day of the Urs-which spanned two days-was attended by people from all walks of life, including scholars who, in their brief sermons, shed light on the teachings of Hazrat Kiyanvi.

The Urs, observed during the first fortnight of June every year, annually draws thousands of devotees from within and outside Jammu and Kashmir to the two-day event. However, this year, there was a slight change in the dates of Urs due to Eid.

Member of Parliament from Anantnag-Rajouri, Mian Altaf Ahmad Larwi-who also heads the shrine management committee responsible for overseeing the Urs arrangements-while speaking with reporters said that, as in previous years, a large gathering of people from across J&K and beyond attended the event.

“Despite Eid, people had already started arriving two days earlier. Even on Sunday, devotees continued to reach here,” he said.

Hundreds of vehicles carrying pilgrims from Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Jammu, Udhampur, Bandipora, Anantnag, and other areas had reached Baba Nagri to participate in the annual Urs.

Throughout the night, devotional gatherings were held, including remembrance of God (zikr-o-azkar), while scholars addressed the devotees, urging them to follow the teachings of Islam and Hazrat Nizam-u-Din Kiyanvi.

“In the morning, with my ‘Dua’, the two-day Urs came to a successful conclusion. It ended on a positive note; the arrival of people was smooth, and their return was also well managed. We prayed for sustained peace and progress in the country as well as in J&K,” Mian Altaf said.

National Conference (NC) President and former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah also visited Baba Nagri to pay obeisance at the shrine of Hazrat Kiyanvi (R.A).

Speaking with reporters at Baba Nagri, Dr. Farooq said that the successful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra and the increased participation of pilgrims would send a positive message, reflecting peace in J&K.

“The more people come for the yatra, the better-it will help compensate for the losses suffered due to the Pahalgam attack. It will send a message that peace prevails,” he said.

Speaking about the Urs, he added that people should pray and seek Almighty’s protection and guidance toward peace and progress. “The era of hatred that is prevailing in the country should come to an end.”

BJP National Executive Member and former State president of BJP for Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh, Ravinder Raina, also visited Wangat and paid obeisance at the shrine of Hazrat Kiyanvi.
