Prayagraj,

22 Dec (HS): The office bearers and workers of the City Congress Committee

staged a protest on Monday afternoon at the District Headquarters against the

proposed Viksit Bharat G-RAM-G Bill, which is being brought in place of

MGNREGA. The protest was led by City Congress President Fuzail Hashmi, with a

large number of party workers raising slogans against the central government.

The protesters were holding placards bearing photographs of Mahatma Gandhi.

Addressing

the gathering held under his chairmanship, Hashmi said that the opposition,

angered by the move to replace MGNREGA with the VBG RAM-G Bill, will launch a

statewide as well as nationwide campaign against it. He stated that the new

scheme would cause serious harm to rural areas. Under this scheme, there will

be no right to work; only targets will be imposed, and policies will keep

changing. Attendance will be marked through a mobile app, but if there is no

network, attendance will not be recorded, and without attendance, wages will

not be paid.

Speakers

at the meeting said that the importance of MGNREGA became clearly evident

during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the economy came to a standstill and

livelihoods were destroyed, this scheme saved crores of people from hunger and

falling into debt. MGNREGA provided people with a right, whereas the G-RAM-G

scheme demands trust. They said that there is strength in rights, while fear

lies in dependence on trust.
