Kolkata, 13 December (H.S.) :

The Border Security Force (BSF) has foiled a major gold smuggling attempt in the Siliguri sector under the North Bengal Frontier, seizing gold worth approximately ₹1.4 crore during a late-night operation.

According to an official statement issued by the BSF on Saturday, alert jawans noticed suspicious movement of a person riding a red Hero Splendor motorcycle without a registration number, heading from Daspara towards Kachkali market. When the security personnel attempted to stop the motorcycle, the rider allegedly tried to attack them.

Acting in self-defence, BSF personnel used a stun grenade, which created smoke and confusion. Taking advantage of the situation, the smuggler managed to flee from the spot.

During a subsequent search of the area, the BSF recovered the motorcycle and a black jacket. On conducting a thorough inspection, two packets wrapped in brown adhesive tape were found. The packets contained eight gold biscuits weighing a total of 928 grams.

The estimated value of the seized gold has been assessed at ₹1,19,71,200. Including the motorcycle and other recovered items, the total value of the seized materials is approximately ₹1.4 crore.

The BSF has handed over the seized gold and other materials to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Siliguri, for further investigation. BSF officials reiterated that the force remains fully committed to preventing smuggling of contraband and prohibited items along the international border and will continue such operations with heightened vigilance.
