West Medinipur, 13 December (H.S.): A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has been arrested in Kharagpur, West Medinipur district, on charges of sexually assaulting a minor. The arrested man has been identified as Dipsona Ghosh, a former ward president of the BJP in Kharagpur town. The incident has put the district's BJP leadership in an awkward position.
According to police sources, a case has been registered against Dipsona Ghosh under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 329(4) and 115(2), as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Kharagpur Town Police Station is investigating the entire matter.
Late Friday night, a source in the district police confirmed that a complaint had been filed against the accused in court. Based on this complaint, a police team led by the officer-in-charge of Kharagpur Town Police Station, Parthasarathi Pal, arrested Dipsona Ghosh from the Subhashpalli area of Kharagpur town. He was produced before the Midnapore court, where the judge ordered him to be remanded in police custody.
The incident has sparked sharp reactions in political circles. The local Trinamool Congress leadership has strongly criticized the BJP over the matter. Sujay Hazra, the Trinamool's Midnapore organizational district president, said that nothing better could be expected from BJP leaders, as people in this party do not know how to respect women.
A local BJP leader stated that Dipsona Ghosh had been arrested before on a complaint filed by a female party worker. At that time too, he was accused of harassing the woman.
According to local sources, the accused leader had risen rapidly in politics since 2017. He was often seen in the front row at various BJP meetings and rallies and later became a ward president. It is alleged that he came into contact with a married woman through party sources. In October of this year, Dipsona Ghosh was accused of sexually assaulting the woman's minor daughter, based on which the police took action and arrested him.
