Kharagpur, 11 December (H.S.) : Dr. Budhaditya Mukherjee, senior faculty member at the School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST) of IIT Kharagpur, has been selected as a Global Investigator by the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). His selection among 12 eminent scientists from various countries marks a significant global recognition for India’s life-science research.

Dr. Mukherjee’s research highlights how drug pressure enhances the adaptability of Leishmania within infected hosts and alters its infection pattern. His findings explain how medicinal stress influences the parasite’s behaviour, virulence and direction of infection. The study is expected to deepen scientific understanding of drug resistance and pathogen–host interactions.

The EMBO Global Investigator programme is a prestigious platform that recognises outstanding emerging research leaders across the world. This year, scientists from Chile, India, Nigeria, Singapore and Taiwan have been selected, representing fields ranging from drought tolerance in agriculture to gene regulation in stony corals.

As a Global Investigator, Dr. Mukherjee will gain access to international collaborative networks comprising over 800 leading scientists, joint institutional programmes, training opportunities, and financial support for research visits.

According to EMBO Director Fiona Watt, the innovative vision of the selected researchers will provide new momentum to the global life-science community.

IIT Kharagpur Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty said Dr. Mukherjee’s selection as an EMBO Global Investigator is a matter of great pride for the institute. He added that Dr. Mukherjee’s pioneering work in infectious disease biology aligns with global scientific priorities and will further strengthen India’s presence on the international research landscape.
