Kolkata, 13 August (H.S.) : A nurse was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding her death. Her body was recovered from a toilet inside the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the hospital’s gynaecology department on Wednesday night.

The exact cause of her death has not yet been ascertained. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident.

According to preliminary information, the nurse was on duty at the gynaecology department’s HDU on Wednesday night. After some time, hospital staff noticed that she was missing from her workplace and began searching for her. She was subsequently found dead inside the HDU toilet.

Following the incident, police reached the hospital, took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination. The exact cause of death is expected to become clear after the post-mortem report is received.

Hospital sources said that there is a preliminary suspicion that the nurse may have died after a drug was injected into her body. However, police have not yet officially confirmed this possibility. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding her death and the events leading up to it.

The incident has also brought back memories of the death of a woman doctor-trainee at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. Her body was recovered from the fourth floor of the hospital’s emergency department, and the subsequent investigation found that she had been raped and murdered. The incident triggered widespread protests across West Bengal.

Against this backdrop, the death of another woman healthcare worker under suspicious circumstances at a government hospital in Kolkata has once again raised questions about hospital security and the circumstances surrounding such incidents. Police are currently awaiting the post-mortem findings and examining other evidence before deciding on further action.
