Kolkata, 13 August (H.S.) : A suspected drug peddler was arrested with around 90 grams of brown sugar during a police operation against narcotics in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, police said.

The accused, identified as Shambhu Rai, a resident of the Sardarpara area of Jalpaiguri, was arrested by a team from Kotwali police station during a raid in the Raninagar area on Wednesday night.

According to police, Rai was allegedly carrying the contraband from Uttar Dinajpur and was attempting to enter Jalpaiguri town when he was intercepted in the Raninagar area. A search of his possession led to the recovery of approximately 90 grams of brown sugar.

Police have launched a further investigation to identify other individuals allegedly involved in the drug trafficking network and ascertain the source and intended destination of the contraband.

The arrested accused is scheduled to be produced before a Jalpaiguri court on Thursday.
