New Delhi, 10 August (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through a Subhashitam shared on his X handle on Monday morning, invoked a well-known Vedic peace mantra to call upon people to lead their lives with virtuous conduct, noble qualities and a commitment to the welfare of society.

The Subhashitam reads: “Bhadram karnebhih shrunuyama deva bhadram pashyemakshabhir yajatrah, sthirair angais tushtuvamsas tanubhir vyashema devahitam yad ayuh.”

The verse is a Vedic peace mantra taken from the Rig Veda (Mandala 1, Sukta 89, Mantra 8). The mantra is also referenced in the Upanishads.

According to the Hindi interpretation shared on the Prime Minister’s X handle, the verse conveys the message: “May we hear words that are truthful, auspicious and enlightening. May we embrace thoughts that promote welfare. With healthy bodies, virtuous conduct and noble qualities, may we dedicate our lives to the welfare of society.”

The message further calls upon people to disseminate truthful, authentic and public-interest information in order to make the nation and society more aware, empowered and harmonious.

Through the Subhashitam, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of cultivating positive thoughts, maintaining high moral standards and using one’s life and actions for the larger good of society and the nation.
