New Delhi, 01 August (H.S.): The Central Government has removed and scientifically processed 9.907 million metric tonnes (99.07 lakh metric tonnes) of legacy waste from the massive Bhalswa landfill site in north-west Delhi. The government has set a target to completely eliminate the towering garbage dump by October 15.

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal inspected the Bhalswa landfill site on Saturday. During the visit, he reviewed the progress of the legacy waste remediation work with senior officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Ministry. Officials also informed the Minister that the waste accumulated up to March this year is targeted to be cleared by December 31.

The Minister directed the MCD to expedite the processing of fresh municipal waste reaching the landfill site so that the pace of waste disposal can be further accelerated and scientific waste management practices can be effectively implemented.

Manohar Lal said that the timely clearance and complete remediation of legacy waste at the Bhalswa landfill site remains a key priority for the government. He added that the inspection reflects the Central Government's commitment to strengthening solid waste management and improving environmental conditions in urban areas.
