Varanasi, 09 July (HS): The hearing on the petition filed
against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for allegedly
making indecent remarks on Lord Shri Ram at Brown University in Boston, USA,
was postponed. This petition, pending in the Additional Chief Judicial
Magistrate (IV) / MP - MLA Court, was to be heard on Thursday. Meanwhile, on
behalf of Rahul Gandhi, his lawyers Shrinath Tripathi and Anuj Yadav filed a
power of attorney on his behalf and sought time to present his side. On which
the court fixed the next date for hearing in this case as July 24, 2026.
According to the case, Advocate Harishankar Pandey filed an
application in the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (IV)/MP-MLA Court. It
states that Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Indian Parliament,
arrived in Boston, USA, on April 21, 2025. He was attending a session with
students at Brown University. There, Rahul Gandhi made a controversial
statement regarding Lord Ram. It is alleged that Rahul Gandhi described Lord
Ram as mythological and called the stories told about that era
fictitious. Furthermore, by questioning the existence of Lord Ram, he hurt the
religious sentiments of millions of Hindus. He also opposed the Ayodhya Ram
Temple and is now questioning the existence of Lord Ram abroad.
The lower court dismissed the application on May 27, 2025,
citing the complaint as unmaintainable. Against this order, Advocate
Harishankar Pandey filed a revision application in the Sessions Court. After
hearing the case, the court again ordered the lower court to hear the petition,
which is pending. In this same case, Rahul Gandhi's lawyers filed a power of
attorney (Vakalatnama) and requested time to present his case.
