Prayagraj, 24 July (HS): India’s

traditional and emerging sport of boomerang is taking a historic step onto the

international stage. Under the banner of the Indo-Boomerang Association (IBA),

Indian athletes will represent the nation at the upcoming World Boomerang

Championship to be held in Indonesia. This milestone marks not only the growing

popularity of boomerang across India but also the country’s determination to

showcase its talent and cultural heritage in a global arena.

Vivek Montrose, recognized as India’s first professional boomerang thrower and

designer, is set to make history once again. A member of the International

Federation of Boomerang Associations (IFBA) in Germany and the founding

president of India’s first official boomerang body, the Indo-Boomerang

Association, Montrose has dedicated his life to advancing the sport in India.

His journey began at the age of eight, when he received his first boomerang

from renowned Western Australian educator and indigenous researcher Lily

Bhavana Kauler. Since then, Kauler has consistently supported and funded the

development of boomerang in India, ensuring resources and encouragement for its

growth.

Fascinated by the speed, aerodynamics, and craftsmanship of boomerangs,

Montrose trained rigorously throughout his childhood. His passion eventually

led him to study under Aboriginal elder Ken Colbung in Western Australia, where

he mastered the cultural significance, traditional carving methods, and

advanced competitive throwing techniques. By 1991, at just 15 years old,

Montrose had achieved expertise in both throwing and crafting, becoming India’s

first boomerang maker with deep knowledge of both traditional and modern

techniques.

Now, under the banner of the Indo-Boomerang Association, India is taking a

giant leap forward. Eight athletes from across the country will represent India

at the upcoming World Boomerang Championship in Indonesia.

Joining them are association members Ravi Kant Mishra, Nitin Kushwaha, and

Dr. Shubhanshu Singh, who will strengthen India’s presence on the global stage.

Montrose emphasized that years of dedication and the athletes’ commitment

have earned India this prestigious opportunity. He stated that the team’s

mission goes beyond winning medals—it is about giving boomerang international

recognition and inspiring more youth to participate.

He further highlighted that boomerang is not merely a recreational activity

but a discipline that combines physics, skill, cultural heritage, and athletic

excellence. With the nation’s hopes pinned on them, Team India aims to return

with pride, raising the tricolor high and showcasing the country’s growing

strength in this unique sport.
