Kolkata, 23 July (H.S.): Swaroop Mitra, the elder son of Trinamool Congress MLA and former minister Madan Mitra, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in connection with the alleged teacher recruitment scam. He arrived at the ED's office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake carrying bank-related documents.

The ED had recently summoned Madan Mitra's wife Archana Mitra and his two sons, Shubharup and Swaroop, on separate dates as part of its investigation. On Wednesday, the agency questioned younger son Shubharup for nearly nine hours. Archana Mitra has been asked to appear before the agency on Friday.

Speaking to reporters before entering the ED office, Swaroop said the agency had sought details of his bank accounts and that he had brought all the required documents. He maintained that there had been no unexplained or illegal transactions in his accounts.

I have brought my bank records and income tax returns from 2013-14 onwards. I will fully cooperate with the investigation, Swaroop said, declining to comment on any political developments.

The ED alleges that at least 125 people secured jobs in Titagarh Municipality in exchange for cash or gold, and Madan Mitra's name surfaced during the course of the investigation. On June 13, the agency conducted searches at multiple premises linked to him and questioned the veteran politician. Subsequently, summons were issued to his wife and both sons as part of the ongoing probe.

Swaroop also confirmed that his mother, Archana Mitra, is scheduled to appear before the ED on Friday.
