Jind (Haryana), 17 July (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered passenger train from Jind railway station in Haryana, marking a significant milestone in the country's journey towards sustainable transportation and clean energy-driven rail infrastructure.

The train will operate between Jind and Sonipat, making India one of the few countries in the world to introduce hydrogen-powered passenger rail services. Developed with indigenous technology, the project reflects the country's growing capabilities in advanced railway engineering and aligns with the vision of building a self-reliant and environmentally sustainable transport network.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister described the launch as a landmark achievement for both Atmanirbhar Bharat and India's green energy mission. He congratulated everyone associated with the project and said the initiative demonstrates the country's commitment to innovation, technological advancement and sustainable development.

The hydrogen-powered train uses fuel cell technology, in which hydrogen reacts with oxygen to generate electricity that powers the train. Unlike conventional diesel-powered trains, the process produces only water vapour as a by-product, resulting in zero carbon emissions during operation. The technology also significantly reduces noise pollution and lowers dependence on fossil fuels, making it an environmentally friendly alternative for rail transport.

The train has been designed with 10 coaches, making it one of the longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains developed globally. Equipped with an advanced propulsion system, the train is expected to offer efficient and reliable service while showcasing India's ability to develop cutting-edge railway technology.

The launch is expected to serve as a pilot project for the wider adoption of hydrogen-powered trains across the Indian Railways network. Officials believe the experience gained from its operation will help shape future green mobility initiatives and support India's long-term climate and energy goals.

The flagging-off ceremony formed part of the Prime Minister's visit to Haryana on Friday, during which he also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several infrastructure projects related to highways, healthcare, railways and public services. The visit underscored the government's continued focus on modernising infrastructure while promoting clean and sustainable technologies across key sectors.

The introduction of the hydrogen-powered train is being viewed as a major step towards transforming India's railway system by combining technological innovation with environmental responsibility, while reinforcing the country's commitment to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable future.
