Kolkata, 14 July (H.S.): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Shibu Kumar Singh, a proclaimed offender who had been absconding for years in connection with the Sukanta Ghosh murder case.

The accused was apprehended on Tuesday from his hideout in the South Gandhi Ashram area on Raiganj Road in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where he had allegedly been living under the assumed identity of Akhilesh Kumar Shahi to evade arrest.

According to the CBI, the case was registered following an order of the Calcutta High Court dated August 27, 2009. After completing its investigation, the agency filed the main charge sheet on December 31, 2010, followed by a supplementary charge sheet on November 14, 2011. Shibu Kumar Singh was named as one of the four accused in the case.

The agency said Singh had remained absconding for several years, prompting the court to declare him a proclaimed offender on September 15, 2016. His arrest was made on the basis of specific intelligence inputs and technical surveillance.

The CBI has obtained a transit remand for the accused and will bring him to Kolkata on Wednesday, where he will be produced before the competent court.

The investigating agency stated that the probe into the case had already been completed and that, following Singh's arrest, the remaining legal proceedings will be carried out before the court in accordance with law.
