Kochi, 11 July (H.S.):Sabarimala Tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru has written to the Travancore Devaswom Board seeking to be relieved of his duties, citing ill health, and has requested that his son, Brahmadathan, be entrusted with the priestly responsibilities in his place.
Under the traditional rotation system followed at the Sabarimala temple, Kandararu Rajeevaru is scheduled to officiate as the Tantri during the upcoming tenure. However, in his letter to the Devaswom Board, he said his health condition would not permit him to discharge the responsibilities and sought permission for his son to perform the rituals instead.
The Travancore Devaswom Board has not yet taken a decision on the request. Sources indicated that the matter is likely to require judicial scrutiny in view of the legal proceedings pending against the Tantri in the Sabarimala gold theft case. Since Rajeevaru was arrested in connection with the case, the Board is expected to act only in accordance with directions from the Kerala High Court.
Kandararu Rajeevaru was arrested by the Special Investigation Team probing the Sabarimala gold theft case. Investigators have alleged that he facilitated the entry and influence of the prime accused, Unnikrishnan Potti, within the temple.
According to the investigation, Rajeevaru played a key role in bringing Potti to Sabarimala and enabling him to gain access and influence. Statements recorded from temple employees have also reportedly pointed to the Tantri's involvement. Several staff members told investigators that Potti's influence within the temple was largely due to Rajeevaru's support.
The Special Investigation Team had earlier concluded that the Tantri acted as a sponsor for Potti, helping him establish his presence in Sabarimala.
The Devaswom Board is now expected to examine Rajeevaru's request in the light of the pending criminal case and the legal position before deciding whether his son can be permitted to perform the Tantri's duties during the forthcoming tenure.
