Washington, 07 June (H.S.): The Embassy of India in the United States on Saturday organized a yoga session in Washington’s Dupont Circle area in the run-up to the International Day of Yoga. The event is being regarded as the beginning of the celebrations leading up to the global observance of Yoga Day.
The information was shared along with photographs on the Indian Embassy’s social media platforms, including its X handle, “India in USA,” and its Facebook page. The Embassy invited people to participate in the main International Day of Yoga celebration, stating, “Join us on June 19 at the Lincoln Memorial to celebrate the International Day of Yoga.”
Preparations are also underway for events marking the 12th International Day of Yoga in Washington, as well as at New York’s Times Square and Chicago’s Navy Pier.
According to the organizers, a mass yoga session will also be held in Hillsboro, Oregon, a major hub for the semiconductor and electronics industries. The occasion will likewise be observed at the Shrinathji Haveli Temple in Irvine, Southern California. The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on June 21 since 2015.
The Consulate General of India in Chicago also promoted the event on X, stating, “Yoga is not merely a physical activity; it is a pathway to balance, mindfulness, and inner peace. Get ready to join the celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga and promote health, unity, and a better lifestyle.” The Chicago event will take place at Polk Bros Park at Navy Pier.
The theme for this year’s International Day of Yoga is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga through a resolution adopted on December 11, 2014, following an initiative proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The first International Day of Yoga was observed on June 21, 2015. Since then, the occasion has been celebrated across the world every year as a global festival promoting physical well-being, mental harmony, and holistic health.
