Guwahati, 07 June (HS): Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday alleged that the BJP-led government has failed to fulfil the expectations of the people despite receiving a strong electoral mandate. He said the government has not taken adequate steps to control the rising prices of essential commodities and fuel, causing hardship to ordinary citizens.
Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, Gogoi said the state government appeared more occupied with political and cabinet-related matters than addressing issues affecting the public. He alleged that efforts to manage dissatisfaction among legislators have diverted attention from concerns such as inflation and the increasing cost of living.
The Congress leader stated that the party has begun a fresh outreach programme and is working to rebuild itself in line with public expectations. He said the party has been reviewing the factors behind its poor performance in previous Assembly elections and is preparing strategies to strengthen its role as a people-centric opposition in the upcoming by-elections.
Gogoi informed that Congress has appointed observers across all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam and compiled reports that are currently being discussed with the party’s central leadership. He added that a review meeting was held at Rajiv Bhavan to assess organisational preparations and formulate strategies for the forthcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election.
The meeting, chaired by Gogoi, was attended by MP Rakibul Hussain, former Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Jayaprakash Das, former minister Pranati Phukan, party MLAs, Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur, Congress leader Roselina Tirkey and members of the committee constituted for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. The participants discussed the party’s campaign plans and organisational roadmap for the by-election.----------
