Kolkata, 04 June (H.S.) : Amid growing political tensions and reported internal rifts within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), senior party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Babul Supriyo has made critical remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that timely action was not taken against corruption within the party.

In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday night, the former Union minister said that if strict action had been taken in the early years of the TMC government against those involved in corruption, misappropriation of public funds, and criminal activities, the current situation would not have become so complicated.

Supriyo alleged that due to what he described as leniency, certain individuals within the party were able to benefit and strengthen their positions over time. He further claimed that several controversial figures later became part of an internal grouping within the organisation, though he did not specify any names.

His reference to a “60-member group” has triggered speculation in political circles, with some interpreting it as an indirect reference to a faction of legislators within the party, although no official clarification has been provided.

In another strongly worded remark, Supriyo used symbolic language to suggest that he was surprised by certain individuals he believed had acted in a deceptive manner within the party. However, he did not name anyone in his statement.

He also advised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against repeating what he termed past mistakes of inducting leaders from other political parties without adequate scrutiny, warning that such decisions could lead to future controversies.

Supriyo clarified that his remarks were his personal opinion and not an official statement of the Trinamool Congress.

His comments have drawn attention within political circles, as public criticism from a senior leader of the ruling party is being seen as a significant development amid ongoing political churn in West Bengal.
