Rain Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 21 June (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a strengthening of the southwest monsoon over Kerala from Sunday, bringing the likelihood of widespread rainfall across several parts of the state. The monsoon had remained relatively weak over the past few days, but weather conditions are now expected to become more active.

According to the IMD, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in eight districts on Sunday. In view of the forecast, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts.

The weather department has advised residents and local authorities in these districts to remain vigilant, as heavy rain could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions and localized flooding in vulnerable locations.

The monsoon is expected to remain active in the coming days. On Monday, heavy rainfall is forecast in Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts, all of which have been placed under a Yellow Alert. The rainfall activity is likely to continue on Tuesday, with Kannur and Kasaragod districts expected to receive heavy showers.

The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. While this category of rainfall is not considered extreme, it can still cause significant inconvenience and minor damage, particularly in areas prone to flooding, landslides or poor drainage.

With the southwest monsoon showing signs of gaining strength, authorities are closely monitoring weather developments and have urged the public to follow official advisories. Fishermen, travellers and residents in hilly and coastal regions have also been advised to exercise caution during periods of intense rainfall.

The IMD is expected to issue further updates as weather conditions evolve over the next few days.
