
New Delhi, 20 June (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended his heartfelt greetings to the people of West Bengal on the occasion of West Bengal Day (West Bengal Foundation Day). He also paid rich tributes to the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, describing his contribution to the nation as unforgettable.
In a message posted on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said that West Bengal has played a defining role in shaping India's history through its invaluable contributions to literature, music, art, spirituality, science, trade, commerce, and social reform. He said the state's rich cultural heritage, intellectual tradition, and legacy of social awakening have consistently provided new direction to the nation.
The Prime Minister said that the land of West Bengal has produced numerous great personalities whose ideas and achievements have inspired not only the state but the entire country. From the Bengal Renaissance to the freedom struggle and the making of modern India, West Bengal has always remained at the forefront of national progress. He noted that the state's cultural consciousness and intellectual legacy constitute an invaluable treasure of Indian democracy and social life.
Prime Minister Modi said that June 20 holds special significance in the history of West Bengal. It was on this day that historic decisions ensured that West Bengal remained an integral part of India. He added that the occasion serves as a reminder of the state's glorious history, its struggles, and its unwavering commitment to national unity.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister paid homage to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, stating that his role in ensuring West Bengal remained part of India and in strengthening national unity was of immense significance. He noted that the nation is observing the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Mookerjee this year, providing an opportunity to remember his nationalist vision, farsighted leadership, and unwavering dedication to the country.
The Prime Minister said that Dr. Mookerjee made remarkable contributions towards safeguarding the nation's unity, integrity, and democratic values. He added that Dr. Mookerjee's ideals and vision continue to inspire citizens to place the nation's interests above all else. His contribution to both West Bengal and nation-building, he said, will always be remembered with profound respect and gratitude.
In his message, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that the Central Government and the Government of West Bengal would continue working together to fulfil the aspirations of the people and open new avenues of development for the state.
