CAIRO, June 16 (HS/RIA Novosti) - The first power unit of Egypt's first nuclear power plant, El Dabaa, will be completed in 2029, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat told RIA Novosti.

We have four power units. The first will be ready in 2029, Esmat said when asked about the completion date for the power units.

The El Dabaa NPP is located in the Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, 350 kilometers from Cairo. The plant will include four power units with Russian-built VVER-1200 reactors, which belong to the 3+ generation and meet the highest international efficiency and safety requirements. The total installed electrical capacity of the nuclear power plant will be nearly 4,800 megawatts. Rosatom's Engineering Division is the general designer and general contractor for the El Dabaa NPP. This is Rosatom's first nuclear power plant construction project in Africa.

Construction of Units 1 and 2 of the El Dabaa NPP began in 2022, with the first concrete poured four months apart — a record for the global nuclear industry. Construction of Unit 3 began in 2023, and Unit 4 in January 2024.
