Abu Dhabi, June 16 (HS): Several countries have jointly condemned the May 17 drone attack on infrastructure linked to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), describing it as a violation of international law and a threat to regional and global security.
According to reports, the attack targeted electrical infrastructure located outside the plant's main operational area. The incident was reportedly claimed by armed groups operating in Iraq.
In a joint statement, dozens of countries expressed concern over the potential environmental and humanitarian risks associated with attacks on nuclear facilities and reiterated their support for the safe and peaceful operation of nuclear installations under the oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The signatories said attacks on civilian nuclear infrastructure undermine international peace and security and violate the principles of the United Nations Charter. They called for an immediate halt to all attacks against the UAE and reaffirmed support for the country's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
The joint statement was endorsed by a large group of countries from across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, along with the European Union.
Barakah is the Arab world's first commercial nuclear power plant and is regarded as a key component of the UAE's energy diversification strategy.
