China a Reliable Neighbour and Partner for Nepal, Says Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Kathmandu, June 16 (HS): Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said that China will remain a reliable neighbour and partner for Nepal in its journey towards development, prosperity and modernisation.

During a meeting with Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal in Beijing, Wang referred to the saying, A close neighbour is better than a distant relative, while underlining the longstanding ties between the two countries.

According to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang said Nepal and China have remained good neighbours for many years and that history and practical experience have demonstrated the benefits of bilateral friendship for Nepal and its people.

He said China attaches great importance to its relations with Nepal as part of its neighbourhood diplomacy and would continue its friendly policy towards the Nepali people.

Wang noted that China and Nepal are neighbouring countries connected by mountains and rivers and sharing common interests. He said that despite changes in international circumstances and Nepal's domestic political landscape, the two countries have consistently advanced bilateral relations on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

The Chinese foreign minister reiterated Beijing's support for Nepal's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. He also expressed support for Nepal's efforts towards development in accordance with its national conditions.

Wang appreciated Nepal's commitment to the One-China policy and its support on issues related to Taiwan and Tibet, which China considers core national interests.

He also reaffirmed China's commitment to expanding cooperation with Nepal under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), including in power transmission networks, roads, border infrastructure and air connectivity.

The Chinese minister said Beijing would encourage Chinese companies to invest in Nepal and expressed hope that Nepal would continue to provide a fair, transparent and favourable business environment for foreign investors.

Both sides also emphasised strengthening cooperation at multilateral forums and safeguarding the common interests of developing countries.
