Imphal, 15 June (HS): Tension gripped the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal on Monday after a protest over the treatment of three injured Kuki individuals escalated into violence, forcing security personnel to use tear gas to restore order.
The demonstrators had gathered outside the hospital premises, alleging inadequate medical attention for three persons who were reportedly wounded during a gunfight near Leilon Vaiphei and Konsakhul villages in Kangpokpi district. The injured were later admitted to RIMS for treatment.
Witnesses said a large crowd assembled at the hospital's main entrance and raised slogans against the authorities. As the protest intensified, several demonstrators entered the campus, resulting in a tense standoff with security forces stationed at the site.
The situation reportedly worsened when a section of the protesters attempted to move towards the emergency ward, leading to a confrontation with security personnel. To prevent further disturbance and bring the crowd under control, tear gas shells were fired, prompting the protesters to disperse from the immediate area.
Despite the intervention, groups of demonstrators continued their agitation outside the hospital, while security deployment remained in place to prevent any fresh outbreak of unrest.
Officials had not reported any additional injuries or arrests in connection with the incident till the filing of this report.-----------
