Chandigarh , 13 June (H.S.): Chandigarh witnessed a shocking incident on Saturday when two masked men entered a medical store in Sector 11 near PGI and opened indiscriminate fire, killing the cashier on the spot.
According to reports, the attackers targeted Kumar Medical Hall and entered the shop posing as customers. They were wearing masks and caps, which made their faces unclear in CCTV footage.
Around 2:30 pm, two men entered the shop and stood at the counter. They reportedly observed the surroundings for about 21 seconds before taking out automatic pistols from behind the counter area and opening fire. Around 13 rounds were fired. Although both attackers were armed, only one is believed to have actually fired the shots. After the attack, both fled the scene.
The deceased has been identified as Janaki Das (45), a resident of Rohru in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh.
CCTV footage shows customers present inside the store at the time of the firing. The attackers had arrived on a scooter, and police believe a third person remained outside as a lookout.
Senior police officials including DSP Dalbir, Station House Officer Inspector Jaspal Singh (Police Station-11), District Crime Cell in-charge Chiranjee Lal, and Crime Branch Inspector Narendra Patial reached the spot immediately after the incident.
SSP Traffic and Security Sumer Pratap Singh confirmed that the firing took place around 2:30 pm and said the attackers used automatic weapons. He added that they arrived on a scooter.
Initial investigation suggests a possible extortion angle, as the shop owner had reportedly received threats from a gang and was provided police security earlier. However, police have not officially confirmed any involvement of the Goldy Brar gang.
Police have launched a large-scale search operation and set up checkpoints across the city. All CCTV footage from nearby areas has been seized, and exit routes from the location have been sealed.
DSP Dalbir Singh said the investigation is ongoing, and all angles including old enmity and extortion are being examined.
