Nagpur, 11 June
(HS): The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court snubbed the Education Department
for issuing notification relating to reopening of schools in the Vidarbha
region, a day before the hearing in the court. The Education Department on June
9 issued notification to reopen schools in Vidarbha on June 22. The hearing on
a PIL on the issue was fixed on June 10.
The High Court
also directed the Education Department to reopen schools in the Vidarbha region
on June 30, as per the decision taken on April 20, 2023.
The decision to
defer the date of reopening the schools is related to hot and humid climate in
the Vidarbha region. The High Court in 2007 had directed the Education
Department to consider high temperatures prevailing in June in the region. The
Court also scrapped the two notifications issued by the department – relating to
school reopening schools on June 15 and on June 22, issued on March 28 and June
9, 2026.
The HS bench
comprising Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Raju Wakode on Wednesday directed the
Education Department to reopen schools in The Vidarbha region on June 30.
The temperature
in the region is still hovering over 40 degrees Celsius 4 to 6 degrees above
normal. Brahmapuri in Chandrapur district registered 45.5 degree, while Nagpur
recorded 43.8 degrees. The supposed to be coolest district in the region,
Buldana, also recorded temperature at 40.3 degree Celsius.
The students in
rural areas have to walk to and from the schools in the scorching heat.
