Chennai, 10 June (H.S.):Actor, filmmaker and social activist Raghava Lawrence has postponed a much-awaited announcement regarding what he described as a “very important life decision,” citing the demise of veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja and the sense of loss prevailing across the film industry.
Lawrence was scheduled to make the announcement on Wednesday morning, a development that had fuelled intense speculation in both political and entertainment circles. However, he said the announcement would now be made on June 12 at 10 a.m. as a mark of respect to Bharathiraja, who passed away on Tuesday.
In a statement posted on social media, Lawrence said the veteran filmmaker’s death had deeply saddened the Tamil film fraternity and cinema lovers. Describing the loss as a personal one, he said the industry was mourning the passing of one of its most influential figures and that it would be inappropriate to proceed with his planned announcement at such a time.
The postponement has further heightened curiosity over the nature of the announcement, which has been the subject of widespread discussion over the past few days. Speculation intensified after reports emerged linking Lawrence to the forthcoming by-election in the Tiruchy East Assembly constituency.
Political observers have been closely watching Lawrence’s moves following media reports suggesting that he could enter the electoral arena as a candidate of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
Addressing the reports earlier this week, Lawrence acknowledged that he had been receiving numerous calls and messages seeking clarification. He said the rumours regarding his possible candidature had reached a level where he felt compelled to respond publicly.
While Lawrence stopped short of either confirming or denying the reports, his comments have kept political speculation alive. With the announcement now rescheduled for Friday, attention remains focused on whether the popular actor is preparing to take a significant step into public life and politics.
