Srinagar, 31 May (H.S.): Police today foiled a Congress-led candlelight march here that was planned in solidarity with the victim of the alleged rape and murder case in Galwanpora, Budgam.

The action drew sharp criticism from the party, which accused the administration of “denying” citizens their democratic right to peaceful protest.

The Congress also demanded a fair and time-bound investigation into the case, a fast-track trial and stringent punishment for those found guilty.

Congress leaders, workers and Mahila Congress members had gathered at the party headquarters on M.A. Road and were scheduled to march to Ghanta Ghar in Lal Chowk.

However, police prevented the procession from moving out of the premises, forcing the protest to remain confined to the party office.

The party said the candlelight march was intended to express solidarity with the victim’s family and seek justice in the case.

During the gathering, workers raised slogans demanding justice for the victim and a speedy investigation.

Congress leader and MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone said the party’s attempt to hold a peaceful march was stopped despite it being a democratic form of protest.

Demanding swift action in the Budgam case, Lone said the investigation should be conducted fairly and transparently and that those responsible should be awarded the strictest punishment under law.

Lone also alleged that the administration was not allowing peaceful protests and linked the incident to what he described as growing concerns over crime and drug abuse in Kashmir.

Another Congress leader, Yasir Mandoo, termed the police action unfortunate and said the march was aimed at highlighting public outrage over the crime.

“Not allowing us to take out the march is unfortunate. This was meant to raise our voice against the gruesome act in Budgam,” Mandoo said.

Mahila Congress leader Shamima Raina also condemned the incident and reiterated the demand for exemplary punishment.
